Let's learn a bit about the inner workings of Fontaine...

Writer's picture: Michelle ShimmyMichelle Shimmy

PDA Online: We are so excited for your workshop!! Thanks for chatting with us today. How long have you been pole dancing for?

Fontaine: I've been pole dancing for 15 years!

PDA Online: Tell us about your funniest / craziest pole gig or performance ever?

Fontaine: Haha definitely my Pole Theatre crack addict teen routine to Yellawolf. I gutted a teddy, masturbated with puppets and sprayed Mountain Dew all over my costume that went completely see through that said daddy's girl on it... I do believe people thought that I was going off the rails after I performed this show so I must have nailed the theme haha. It was also the routine that made me most scared because it was completely out of my comfort zone. But I did it for the sake of being artistic and theatrical.

PDA Online: You've been poling a long time! The pole industry has changed a lot over the years. In your view, what's the best thing and the worst thing about how the pole industry has changed over the past decade?
Fontaine: Best thing would be how versatile it is. There are so many ways to perform on the pole whether you enjoy the gymnastic trickster style or XO style. People are always inventing new ways to wrap, pop, slide and dance their way around a pole. It's always exciting.

When I first started there were only a couple of handfuls of elite tricks, and the dance style was quite basic and sensual, most people were able to achieve them or that style so everyone wanted to give it a go because it was something that the everyday person could master. Nowadays moves are created by ex rhythmic gymnasts who can bend inside and out or by people with unachievable strength. It can be a lot more daunting for the everyday person to step into a class and walk away happy with their achievements. But again there is always a style to suit the individual. So people should just go for it!

PDA Online: What's your favourite comp piece you’ve ever done, and why?

Fontaine: Favourites would be... ohh damn there are a few. I absolutely loved Dance Filthy, to Down with the Sickness. We did high kicks in 8 inches and I had two amazing dancers along side me. It was a spectacular show and we nailed it. I travelled to the USA to perform it for the second time for Alethea Austin at Live Dancing Girls.

And last would be MPDV in my slinky dreamy show in a full length crystalled nude catsuit.

I loved all these pieces because they are exactly my style with no pressure to act or perform or conform to comp guidelines. Lol.. I'm always the one breaking the rules.

PDA Online: We love it! What does your comp prep process look like?

Fontaine: Comp process has always been so last minute. Often I'm sewing or crystalling the night before. It's just so dramatic and rushed. Often I will practice the first half of my piece a lot and leave the last part, the aerial stuff, to the last minute and have to freestyle. Basically my comp prep is not a professional standard. But I'm hoping to change that this year because I want to perform a great piece. With more pole tricks.

PDA Online: How do you manage to juggle mum life and pole life?

Fontaine: It can be difficult. I love my alone time to be creative and I don't get a lot of that. I just think being patient is important because timing is everything and I love spending time with my daughter and that right now is the most important thing for both of us.

I also find ways to navigate stay current the industry when I don't have time to head into the studio like creating cool fashion and customising Pole Heels with my brand Stripper Market.

PDA Online: Thanks for chatting with us today! Can't wait for your workshop!!
